Katarina Witt started skating at the age of five. She was able to prove her skill and was accepted into the Karl-Marx-Stadt Special School for gifted kids. Coach Jutta was also there. Breakthrough year Witt's breakthrough came in 1982, when she placed second at the World Championships in Copenhagen. In the years since, Witt's elegance and grace have caught all the attention of people. Olympic success at Sarajevo, in the Sarajevo Winter Games of 1984, Katarina Witz won the ladies' silver medal in figure skating following an intense contest. Four years later, she won an even tighter contest. She actually lost the free-skating competition, but earned the gold medal based upon her results in the mandatory figures as well as the short programme. Witt is the first figure skater female to have won the same competition twice, in the same year since Sonja Heine. Hall of Fame Witt competed at Lillehammer Winter Games in 1994 following her successful run as an actor. Although she didn't get a medal, she impressed her spectators despite finishing seventh. Witt was named to the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame by its members in 1995.
